New Hanover County Receives Improved Fire District Ratings
In March 2012, New Hanover County received official notification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of the State Fire Marshal of an improvement in the fire district’s response rating. The Southern New Hanover County Fire District received a 4 rating, while the Northern Fire District received a 4/9E rating.

The protection class 4 applies to properties within 5 road miles of a fire station. The 9E applies to properties beyond 5 road miles but less than 6 road miles of a fire station. Properties beyond 6 road miles of a fire station would be considered unprotected.

Previously rated in 2005 the new rating demonstrates the Board of County Commissioners and the County’s Fire Rescue Department’s commitment to provided exemplary fire protection to the citizens of New Hanover County.
